Pet Peeve #132:
The use of brand-name bags as lunch sacks.
This is for all you lunch-goers out there who tote Banana Republic, Sephora, Club Monaco, and Tristan and America paper bags day in day out, like you've been on a shopping spree all year long. We all know what you have in there! It's no surprise! It's your lunch! We're not impressed by you simply because eight years ago you bought over priced nylons from Holt Renfrew.
Sure, I get that they're sturdy. But then why not use your Wine Depot paper bags? Hmmm? Or by yourself one of those nifty cloth sacks? Or one of those ultra cool hard top lunch boxes? I'm proud of my Safe Way plastic bag. It's a way of reusing them... Lord knows I have enough of them.
But to the girl on the bus this morning who had gone so far as to tape up her disintegrating Bebe paper bag... Not cool.
I hope this is a trend that dies quickly. Along with the fashion mullet.

i admit it: i use those bags.
but here is why:
1. they ARE sturdy. they fit two peices of tupperware and a waterbottle very nicely.
2. often, they are waterproof, especially if they are makeup bags
3. they have handles that are easy to carry (which cloth bags often do not)
4. they are easy to identify in the fridge, plus they stand up in the fridge, so your stuff wont leak
5. they are small enough that i'm not carrying a giant, half-empty bag around
6. i cannot recycle paper in my building, but i can reuse plastic for garbage bags
7.i'm vain as fuck
dont worry, though. i havent been carrying lunch in bags like these for a while. mostly because here in saskatoon, there's the eskimo shop and rikki's. no sephora in sight. i did take my miniwheats to work in a mac makeup bag, but that only made me happy because it was miniwheats in a makeup bag. i thought it showed my downtoearthness. it's only pretentious, i think, if you're bringing lowfat muffins from starbucks and other highclass snacks in those bags.

I'm sorry, but how do miniwheats in a MAC bag make you look down-to-earth?
"it's only pretentious, i think, if you're bringing lowfat muffins from starbucks and other highclass snacks in those bags."
miniwheats are not showoffy, therefore, miniwheats in a mac bag is just recycling. if i was, first and foremost, concerned with showing off the mac bag, i would fill it will slices of starfruit or organic fruitleather, not highfibre cereal.
in my opinion, classy people do not eat minwheats, thrifty people do.

ps coincidentally, i brought my lunch today in a lush bag, and my sandwhich was in a bread-sized spa ahava bag inside the lush bag.
does this mean we are no longer friends, or does the fact that it was a tuna sandwich redeem me somewhat?
Just to add fuel to the fire: the Mac bags are made of plastic. Why aren't you using them for garbage? I'm sure you could find some tiny garbage to put in them. And are you tellig me you eat your mini-wheats from a plastic bag, milk and all? That can't be too easy.
Also (dare I say it) mini-wheats are not thrifty. They are expensive. Unless you're buying the fake cereals, like "Fruity O's" or "Corn Puffs," (which we all know are really Fruit Loops and Corn Pops.)
p.s. Yea Keri!
p.p.s. Is there really a store called the Eskimo Shop? Completely offensive.
the mac bag is tiny. its for small 16$ eyeshadow.
i eat the miniwheats dry. and they are cheaper than starfruit or organic fruit leather or heroin, or whatever the hip kids are eating these days.
yes, keri, i could buy a cute lunch bag at a trendy shop, but then i would no longer be recycling, i would be showing off how cool i am, and i would be throwing out the small makeup bags that are useless unless you put lunch things in them.
its a shop called Quinn the Eskimo.
now get off my back, all of you. i thought i was supposed to be the cool aunt from out of town. so leave me to it.
one last question: how do you feel about people carrying around nokomis bags for things like lunches and overnight travel and the beach? there is NO shop trendier or more elite than nokomis. why has the trendy cloth bag escaped your rage?
jenny
Who said it has?
And I wouldn't say there is no store "more elite" than Nokomis.
I think you guys should all invest in lunch kits.
Pants
im giving up. okay? fine. your point has been made:
im a self-centred egotistical and showoffy princess who deserves rashes from her expensive shopping. there is no way i can possibly defend myself, try as i might.
but my swan song is this:
i dont WANT to invest in a lunch kit when i get bags for free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i use whatever bag is handy! i use safeway bags and makeup bags and liquor store bags and nokomis bags and boutique store bags and my cloth lunch bag with sesame street characters on it. i use them ALL. i use whatever the fuck is handy.
can we stop this now?
Sure.
The thing is, my post wasn't about recyclers, it was about people who go out of their way to use fancy bags to tote their lunch.
I think it's funny. If I was personally attacking you, I would have said, "Sleeve's use of brand-name bags as lunch sacks."
Relax.
I was trying to point out that not everyone using brand-name bags is doing it for the "look" (though, clearly, chicky with the taped up bebe bag certainly was).
i cant relax. that is not a state i have ever been in. in fact, im not sure i have ever been relaxed, ever.
No. You haven't. Because then my apartment would be overrun with Safeway bags.
Clarification: my beef was with people who carry namebrand paper bags for their lunch. At no point did I say I had a beef with the Nokomis bags. I just didn't say I didn't. But that was because it was kinda funny to watch Sleeve get all hysterical... Sorry, but it's true.
i dont tease well. in fact, it makes me cry. you actually brought me to frustrated tears. people my whole life have teased me to the point of tears for sport.
yeah, well, there's a reason they outlawed bear-baiting: its mean!!! look what it does to me!
that said, in truth i share your distain for people who show off for showoffing's sake. you know what we should do? we should make CLOTH bags that look like holt renfrew and mexx bags. that would be pretty funny. only, they could be spoofs like "club moron" and "banana repulsive". i would carry one of those. of course, while wearing my club monaco pants and banana republic sweater.
ah, la vie d'une hypocrite...
